Doctor Strange is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and we don’t want to spoil anything, but we can’t wait to finally see it. But we know some people aren’t as excited as we are, and would like to know: when and where does Doctor Strange take place? (Spoiler: it’s not in New York City.) We’ve ranked our answers from most likely to least likely, and we’re curious which one is closest to the truth.
As in most Marvel films, Doctor Strange takes place in New York in the year 2016 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why does it matter? Yes, it matters a lot. The first teaser trailer for Doctor Strange, which first debuted online in November 2016, confirms that the film will take place in New York. After that first teaser trailer, Doctor Strange was then shown at the New York Comic Con in October 2017, and pictures then emerged from the film’s set as it was being filmed in London, as well as a synopsis for the film.
When the concept of Marvel Studio’s 2016 blockbuster, “Doctor Strange”, was first revealed to Universal Studios back in 2009, it was met with a lot of criticism. The Marvel Universe’s resident doctor was not only a doctor but also a sorcerer, and he also wore a funny hat. The character was also very old, and his origin story involved time travel. The movie was set to begin when Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was still a doctor living in a house in New York, and it would introduce a powerful villain, Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), who would be a character from the comic book series “Doctor Strange”.
Doctor Strange is a 2016 American superhero film directed by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It was the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourteenth film (MCU). Benedict Cumberbatch appears with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton in the film directed by Scott Derrickson, who also wrote it with Jon Spaihts and C. Robert Cargill. Doctor Strange is widely regarded as one of the greatest Marvel Cinematic Universe films, which is why we’ve chosen to explain when it takes place.
Doctor Strange is a real-time story set in 2016, thus it takes place in 2016. According to filmmaker Scott Derrickson, the film begins in January 2016 (with certain sequences dating back to 2014) and concludes in November of the same year.
In today’s post, we’ll go through the Doctor Strange timeline. To begin, you’ll need to figure out what occurs in the movie in order to fit it into the broader chronology. After that, you’ll learn when the film takes place and how it fits into the current MCU chronology. Enjoy!
When will Doctor Strange be released?
So, in order to correctly establish the Doctor Strange movie’s chronology, we must examine the information at hand. Original and foremost, we know that the film is set in current time, indicating that it will not be a historical drama like the first Captain America film or the most recent Black Widow film. Second, the film seems to take place in the current day, as verified by Derrickson. Finally, there’s the material from Derrickson himself, which clarifies a lot about the film. So, what does all of this mean?
We know that certain sequences took place in 2014, but the majority of the film – which is staged in real time – takes place in 2016. It starts at the beginning of the year and continues until November 2016, when the film finishes. So, based on what we’ve learned so far, the film takes place between January/February 2016 and November 2016.
Where does Doctor Strange fall within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline?
Doctor Strange is the 19th (out of 24) film in the MCU’s official cinematic chronology as of 2021. The film is set in 2016, immediately after 2018’s Black Panther and before 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, bridging the narrative gap between the two films.
In Doctor Strange, what happens?
The sorcerer Kaecilius and his Zealots infiltrate the hidden complex of Kamar-Taj in Kathmandu, Nepal, and kill its librarian, keeper of ancient and magical writings. They steal a ritual from a prohibited book written by the Ancient One, a sorceress who has taught everyone in Kamar-Taj, including Kaecilius, the secrets of the magical arts for an unknown amount of time. The Ancient One pursues traitors across London, but Kaecillius and the Pages, as well as some of his supporters, manage to flee.
In a horrific automobile accident, Doctor Stephen Strange, a well-known neurosurgeon, loses the use of his hands, which are crushed to the forearm. Strange barely makes it. Christine Palmer, his ex-lover and coworker, attempts to help him move on, but the egotistical Strange is more interested in swiftly healing his wounds. Strange searches for Jonathan Pangborn, a paraplegic who suddenly regained his ability to walk after months of attempting various operations on his hands and exhausting all of his money.
Strange is sent by Pangborn to the Nepalese town of Kamar-Taj, where he is taken in by another magician called Karl Mordo. This brings him before The Ancient One, who demonstrates his authority by showing the astral plane and other dimensions, including the mirror realm, to Strange; nevertheless, Strange is dubious, and he is banished. Strange then begs her to teach him, and despite her attitude, which reminds him of Kaecillius, she finally complies. Strange starts his apprenticeship under The Ancient One and Mordo, learning from the ancient volumes in the library, which is now guarded by Master Wong.
The Earth is said to be shielded from other realms by a spell cast by three sanctuaries : New York City, London, and Hong Kong. The sorcerers’ job is to guard the holy sites, but Pangborn decided to forego this duty in favor of channeling energy to recover his ability to walk; Strange will have to choose between regaining control of his hands and protecting the world from this revelation.
Over the course of many months, Strange advances quickly, including covertly perusing prohibited books and learning to bend time with the Mystical Eye of Agamotto. Mordo and Wong caution Strange against using abilities that may defy nature’s rules, contrasting his arrogant desire for power to that of Kaecillius, who thinks that when their loved ones die, they must each live as long as the Ancient One. The stolen books are used by Kaecillius and his supporters to call the powerful Dormammu from the Dark Dimension, where time does not exist and everyone may live forever.
The Sanctum in London is destroyed, and Strange of Kamar-Taj is mistakenly sent to the Sanctum in New York. The fans assassinate the Sanctuary’s guardian before attacking Strange, who fights them off with the magical Cloak of Levitation, which selected Strange as its owner for some reason, until Mordo and the Ancient One arrive. After Kaecillius confesses to Strange that his long life is due to his own use of Dormammu’s power, Strange and Mordo grow disillusioned with their instructor.
After fatally wounding the Ancient One, Kaecillius flees to Hong Kong. Before she dies, she warns Strange that in order to balance Mordo’s unyielding character, he, too, would have to violate the rules. Despite the best efforts of a befuddled Strange and Palmer, he dies. When Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong, they discover Wong has died and the Sanctum has been destroyed, with the Dark Dimension enveloping Earth. Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to rewind back time and rescue Wong, the Sanctum, and the city before establishing an endless time loop inside the Dark Dimension that confines both himself and Dormammu in the same moment forever, despite Dormammu repeatedly killing him.
Dormammu eventually tires of the time loop and offers to depart Earth with his minions provided Strange deactivates it. Strange accepts the bargain and the loop is automatically deactivated. Mordo decides to quit the life of a sorcerer after becoming disgusted by Strange’s disregard to the repercussions of defying nature. Strange gives Kamar-Taj the Eye of Agamotto, which contains an Infinity Stone (the Time Stone), and then goes to the Sanctum of Next York to resume his studies as the new Sorcerer Supreme.
What was Doctor Strange’s stay in Kamar-Taj like?
Stephen Strange spent approximately half a year in Kamar-Taj, according to what we know and what Scott Derrickson told us. Strange spent many months at Kamar-Taj, although it was never mentioned how long he trained there. The tale starts in January 2016 and concludes in November of the same year, implying that Strange spent several months in Kamar-Taj.
According to Derrickson, the movie’s chronology is as follows:
“You know, the movie builds up to the present day, and if you follow the chronology of the movie, the remainder of the movie runs in real time from the moment Strange is blasted through the Sanctum in the middle of the movie.”
Scott Derrickson (Scott Derrickson)
